Inpatient Alcohol Abuse Treatment Decreases Risk for Relapse

Inpatient alcohol abuse treatment provides a secure, supportive, and structured environment that significantly decreases the likelihood for relapse. Residential programs are emotionally supportive and focus on addressing both a patient’s alcohol abuse as well as the factors that underlie this abuse. Most importantly, inpatient alcohol abuse programs remove patients from the pressures and negative influences in their home environment that may have enabled their alcohol abuse. Recovering addicts benefit from being in a supportive environment where they do not need to worry about day-to-day stressors and can instead focus on their sobriety and healing the emotional wounds that may have contributed to their alcohol abuse. Inpatient alcohol treatment programs may begin with a supervised medical detox to safely remove toxins associated with alcohol abuse from the individual’s body. Next, program participants will begin a 12-step program like Alcoholics Anonymous. Additional counseling and therapy, such as group therapy, one-on-one counseling, or holistic therapy may also be available. Many inpatient programs offer specialized programs designed specifically for men, women, teenagers, seniors, and gays and lesbians. Some alcohol treatment programs may also include an outpatient component or offer transitional living programs to help individuals readjust following the completion of their inpatient program.
