The Golden State and Youth Drinking
California has the largest population in the US. Its nickname of the “Golden State” lends to a notion that there, anything is possible and everything is better. California is home to beaches and surfers and movie stars and that’s what it’s best known for. But the everyday inhabitants don’t think of the vacation mentality the rest of the country associates with the locale. The population is as diverse as the climates statewide.
While the state is often associated with youth, that’s also where the heaviest drinking issues lie. Underage drinking statistics show that people under the age of 21 in California consume far more alcohol than their adult counterparts. While today’s instances of underage drinking are much improved over those a decade ago, there is still cause for some concern.
Christian Based Alcohol Treatment Programs to Aid in Recovery
California offers many different types of treatment programs, from very exclusive luxury accommodations to outpatient meetings. While statistics show that long-term residential treatment has a higher success rate, the biggest determining factor is the patient, their commitment to recovery, and their comfort level with the type of treatment they receive. For people of faith, Christian-based treatment programs can have a very high success rate because their mode of therapy heals the spiritual wounds as well as the physical and emotional.
The Well in Chico, California offers a one year residential treatment program. They offer Bible study and a Christian-based, 12-step program and work with residents who cannot afford the treatment. The cost is $400 per month for those who can pay the full amount. The Well doesn’t have a waiting list, but they do have a strict admissions policy and will not admit just any patient. They will only admit those who are certain that they want help and are ready to do the work to beat their addiction.
The Lighthouse Women and Children’s Mission in Oxnard offers a 3 month residential program for women and a 1 month detox for those who need it. The Lighthouse specializes in working with women who have lost custody of their children – they work to reunite families and heal women so that they can become the mothers they want to be. They offer parenting classes and vocational classes as well as a faith-based treatment program.
The Santa Rosa Victory Outreach in Santa Rosa offers a long-term residential treatment program for men only. They offer affordable treatment as an alternative for those who cannot afford the high cost of care and in some cases can offer free treatment. Patients commit to one year in sober living. The therapy is Christian-based with Bible study.
